Moving to Italy to study: documents to keep with you

A practical, source-linked arrival checklist for students preparing to travel to Italy for university. Your passport, visa type, course and consular jurisdiction determine the exact rules.

Sources checked 25 October 2026 · English-language guide

Use your own official checklist. The Italian consulate that issued your visa and your university are the final sources for your case. A flight departing from a city does not by itself establish which consular rules apply. This page gives general orientation, not immigration or legal advice.

Keep these documents easy to reach

Put essential travel and study papers in your hand luggage, with copies saved securely for offline access. Border authorities may ask again for supporting documents related to your visa.

  • Passport and visa: check the visa dates, entry count and personal details against your passport.
  • University proof: admission or enrolment confirmation and, where applicable, the validated Universitaly pre-enrolment summary.
  • Where you will stay: university housing confirmation, a booking or rental document, plus the address and contact details.
  • Funding and cover: scholarship or financial-support evidence and the health-insurance certificate relevant to your visa.
  • Education records: keep the original certificates and transcripts with any apostille, Declaration of Value (DoV) or CIMEA document your own consulate or university required.
  • Useful contact sheet: your university international office, accommodation contact and an emergency contact.

The current Mumbai-jurisdiction checklist for 2026–27/2027–28 lists these kinds of supporting documents for visa applications. It is not a universal list for every nationality, consulate or visa, and it does not mean every applicant must carry every item at the border.

After arrival on a Type D study visa

For a non-EU student arriving on a national Type D visa for university enrolment and staying over 90 days, the official guidance says to apply for a study residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) within eight working days of arrival.

  • Ask your university’s international student office whether it helps students submit the application.
  • The official Study in Italy instructions describe the postal application kit and supporting copies, including passport and visa pages, enrolment proof, tax code, housing and insurance evidence.
  • Do not put original documents in the postal envelope; take originals with you when requested and follow the current instructions from the post office and Questura.
  • Keep the application receipt safe. It is proof that you submitted the request and includes information for tracking it.

EU citizens and students with another visa or stay type follow different procedures. Confirm your route with your university or the competent authorities.

Protect your documents and travel details

  • Do not post a passport, visa, bank statement, full address, booking reference or exact travel schedule in a public group.
  • Send document copies only to a verified university, consulate, insurer or other legitimate recipient through its official channel.
  • Before paying for a room, verify the property, person, written terms and payment recipient independently. Be cautious of pressure to pay before you can verify the offer.

Find real housing and job options

Campania student housing

ADISURC, Campania’s regional student-rights agency, publishes university-residence information including locations in Naples and Aversa. Places, eligibility and application dates depend on the current call; check directly with ADISURC and your university.

European job vacancies

Search current EURES vacancies. EURES says its vacancy database is updated daily and expired notices are removed. Some job titles and descriptions remain in the employer’s language. Read the original notice and apply through the official employer or employment service.

Yaarlo should show where each opportunity came from and when it was checked. Community housing and jobs should be posted by the owner, employer or an authorised representative; we do not copy every advertisement from other sites or present external listings as Yaarlo-verified.
