Italy university application documents: 2027–28 checklist

Starting a bachelor’s or master’s application? Use this planning list to gather your academic records, then follow the current admission call from each university and programme.

Official guidance checked 29 October 2026 · English-language guide

First, a key distinction: this is an independent Yaarlo planning guide, not an Italian government checklist. Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs directs applicants to the university for its admission requirements. Language evidence, tests, translations and qualification documents vary by course and applicant.

Bachelor’s applicants

Academic records to prepare

  • If you completed school in India, gather your Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets and certificates.
  • Check whether the course requires particular subjects, grades, an entrance test or additional study before enrolment.
  • Keep originals available. Upload scans only through the university’s official application portal when requested.

Other items the course may request

  • Passport identity page and a recent photograph, if required by the application portal.
  • Accepted language evidence. IELTS, TOEFL or a Medium of Instruction letter only helps if that programme explicitly accepts it.
  • CV, motivation letter, references, portfolio or entrance-test results when listed in the course call.
Master’s applicants

Academic records to prepare

  • Bachelor’s degree certificate or provisional certificate.
  • Complete bachelor’s transcript, including grading information if requested.
  • Course descriptions or a detailed syllabus if the programme needs to assess subject prerequisites.

Other items the course may request

  • Passport identity page, photograph and an updated CV, as required by the portal.
  • Accepted language evidence. Do not assume a Medium of Instruction letter replaces a test.
  • Statement of purpose, recommendation letters, portfolio, interview or entrance-test results when required for that programme.

A practical preparation plan

  1. Shortlist programmes and read each current admission call from start to finish. Record its deadline, required format, language level, tests and application fee, if any.
  2. Prepare clear scans of the records you already have. Check that names, dates and grades are readable; follow the portal’s file type, size and translation instructions.
  3. Ask the university before paying for translations, apostilles, a CIMEA service or a Declaration of Value. These are not universal admission requirements. A Declaration of Value describes a foreign qualification; it does not itself recognise the qualification.
  4. Apply directly through the university’s stated channel. Keep the admission process and any later visa application as separate checklists.

Foreign qualifications are assessed for the purpose and course by the relevant institution. The Italian Ministry explains that recognition procedures differ and that a Declaration of Value is informative, not a recognition decision. See its foreign qualification and Declaration of Value guidance.

2027–28 update: Universitaly and student visas

The Ministry’s current guidance says that non-EU applicants living abroad who need a study visa must pre-enrol through Universitaly. The listed requirement covers the 2027–28 academic year and includes bachelor’s and master’s courses. This pre-enrolment is a visa-process step; follow the university’s own instructions for applying for admission.

For 2027–28, the official procedures set 31 October 2027 as the final date to submit a study-visa application for standard degree courses, including bachelor’s, two-year master’s degrees (Laurea Magistrale) and AFAM degrees. Universities may set an earlier course-specific date, so follow the earlier deadline. This is a visa-application deadline, not the university’s admission deadline.

Other course types, including a Master universitario, PhD, Erasmus, individual and foundation courses, follow a different timetable: the visa application must be submitted no later than the start of teaching. Check the procedure for your exact course and the Italian mission responsible for your place of residence. Universitaly pre-enrolment or university validation does not guarantee a visa appointment or visa approval.

The Ministry currently lists €10,179.85 per year as the minimum financial resources for a university-enrolment study visa for 2026–27 and 2027–28. This is a visa requirement, not a total cost-of-study estimate. Check the official visa page and the Italian mission responsible for your place of residence for the current evidence rules and any later updates.

EU citizens and non-EU citizens already legally resident in Italy who do not need a visa follow a different pre-enrolment route. Use the Ministry’s Study in Italy FAQ and current Universitaly procedures for your case. A university offer does not guarantee that a visa will be issued.

Language proof: check before booking a test

Each programme sets its accepted language, minimum level and proof. Some may accept a certificate from prior education; others require a named test or a test arranged by the university.

Do not rely on a Medium of Instruction certificate unless the specific course call says it is accepted for your application. Ask the admissions office in writing if the rule is unclear.

Useful extra: scholarships

Check the Italian government’s scholarship listings, the university’s own funding page and the regional “diritto allo studio” scholarship route. Eligibility, required documents and deadlines are separate from admission and can differ by region and academic year.

Explore the Ministry’s scholarship information for foreign citizens and check the call that applies to you.

Keep your documents private

Never post a passport, marksheet, transcript, bank statement, visa, full home address or application reference in a public feed or group chat. Send records only through a verified university, consulate or official application service. Be careful of anyone promising admission or a visa in return for money.
